'Bear essential' bench arrives ... after 160 years

Picture
23 October 2020: How long have you waited for a bench to be installed, can you beat 160 years?

Haslemere station has been open for 160 years and in all that time there have been no seats or benches on the station forecourt. So what about the passengers waiting for onward travel? Well ,young or old, they had to stand.

But, thanks to some joined-up thinking, the Surrey Hills to South Downs Community Rail Partnership encouraged South Western Railway to install the forecourt's first bench since that first steam train arrived.

What’s more the bench is conveniently installed right by the bus stop. Not even people waiting for those omnibuses or horse-drawn carriages in the early 1920s (picture below) had seats or benches to sit on. But now – from 2020 onwards – passengers can rest while waiting wait for the bus to arrive!

It's a little common sense applied for onward travel.
